300 million bottles shipped in 2023

In 2023, total Champagne shipments reached 299 million bottles, marking a decline of 8.2% compared to the previous year. Despite this decrease, Champagne managed to return to a level of shipments similar to that before the health crisis. In 2019, the Champagne industry shipped 297.3 million bottles, but in 2020, sales fell by 18% due to the Covid-19 crisis.

The years 2021 and 2022 had seen a spectacular rebound, with a 33% increase in sales in two years, reaching more than 325 million bottles at the end of 2022.

Despite the drop in volumes, Champagne maintained its turnover above 6 billion euros by focusing on the move upmarket of vintages, particularly for export. Exports now represent more than 57% of total Champagne sales, compared to 45% ten years ago, a significant increase attributed in part to overstocking by distributors in 2022.
