As part of the Green and Blue Contract of the Parc Naturel Régional des Volcans d'Auvergne, the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes delegation of the National Forestry Property Centre (CNPF) has received funding from the Regional Council and Europe (ERDF) to search for volunteer forest owners to create senescence islands in their forests. These preserved areas make it possible to build a framework of old wood at the scale of the park's territory and more broadly at a regional scale.

A senescence island is a forest area of around 0.5 to a few hectares left to grow naturally, i.e. without any forestry practices, for at least 30 years. These predominantly large and/or very large areas are of particular biological value. These islands are home to many "saproxylic" species (moss, mushrooms, insects, birds, etc.), which spend all or part of their life cycle in decomposing wood. The France Valley Patrimoine Forestry Investment Group has undertaken the creation of three senescence islands in Charbonnière Forest. These will enrich the diversity of the forest landscapes and France Valley has undertaken to keep them in a natural growth state without any intervention (works, wood cutting, development, etc.).
